As a little girl, Suzanne witnessed her father abuse her mother and it terrified her. “He would throw her down the stairs, then yell at me for crying,” she recalls.

“City Mission has been a gift."

When Ed began struggling with physical challenges and no longer had a safe place to stay, he knew where to turn. He’d been to the Mission nearly 30 years before and the experience had transformed his life.

Matt came to Pennsylvania to get away from the man he’d become. “I couldn’t look in the mirror without cringing. I was trying to outrun myself,” he says.

Raised in a dysfunctional family and eventually placed in foster care, Autumn struggled with anxiety that prevented her from building healthy relationships and developing important life skills.

For over a decade, Travis lived on the streets. He finally grew tired of addiction controlling his life and destroying everything he loved.

As a teenager, Pedro says, he was big for his age. Longing to fit in, he sought the friendship of others who were older and who, tragically, led him down a self-destructive path of substance abuse.

Growing up without a father, Matt had no stable role model to guide him. He fell in with the wrong crowd and developed harmful addictions and behaviors that took control of his life.

There are plenty of facilities but none like this one,” says Kazmiere, a resident of City Mission’s Women with Children Shelter. “The compassion of the people in this place is amazing. They want to see you rise up and be successful.”

These are fearful days. A homeless shelter is one of the last places you’d choose to hunker down at a time like this. But the residents at City Mission are responding to this crisis with remarkable patience, compassion, and togetherness.

Before coming to City Mission this past March, Mike boarded himself up in a dingy motel room. “I barricaded myself in,” he said. “I pushed the dresser in front of the door, and I was in the shower with a gun in my mouth.” His struggle with addiction brought him to the end of his rope. “I lost just about everybody in my life. I lost everything — my home, all my material things, my son ... my rights to see him

Amanda is a resident at City Mission’s Women with Children Shelter. She suffered through ten years of addiction and five years in an abusive relationship. “He shot at me. He tried to stab me,” she says. “He threw me out of a truck in New York and told me to find my own way home.”

We’ve been at the Mission for 14 months, so we were here last Christmas. There was a mini Christmas tree in every suite, and everything was decorated. It really felt like home. I didn’t have to worry about food, money, decorations or buying presents. Everything was put together for us. We could just relax. Our whole room was filled with gifts.

No pregnant woman should ever be homeless and reduced to living alone in the woods. On top of that, Children and Youth Services had recently taken away Fellisha’s two sons, and she was trapped in a drug addiction. She supported herself by begging for food and taking showers under garden hoses at night.
